Well length versus overall length
Overall length includes the neck and rear running gear. The usable main deck or well is the carrying space between transitions, obstructions and equipment that cannot support the load.
Identify the usable envelope
Record clear well length, side rail arrangement, wheel troughs and the rear transition. Do not subtract a guessed neck length from the overall figure to manufacture a usable dimension.

Plan the supports
A load may overhang the well while its supports fit, or may be shorter overall while its supports clash with a transition. The support drawing decides which comparison is meaningful.

Distinguish nominal well from clear space
A manufacturer can publish a main-deck or well length without defining every obstruction or usable support boundary. The specification library labels that nominal dimension separately. Highway Match uses a documented clear dimension or an explicitly entered verified measurement; it does not silently promote a nominal well length into clear usable space.

Measure the load at its supports
Record both the complete transported envelope and the footprint that must sit on the deck. The two checks answer different questions. Include attachments or projections that affect overhang and turning, then identify where the load reactions enter the trailer. A load that is shorter than the nominal well can still have an unsuitable support or loading arrangement.
