RESEARCH GUIDE 12

Inspecting and specifying a used trailer

Start with the serial plate, build sheet and current configuration. Document modifications and inspect the load-bearing, coupling, hydraulic, brake and running-gear systems with qualified help.

01

Reconcile identity and condition

A listing may show an old photograph or omit an added axle. Record the as-inspected dimensions and components, and resolve any disagreement with the model reference.

  • Serial and ownership evidence
  • Build sheet and modification record
  • Frame and crossmember condition
  • Suspension, brakes and tyres
02

Write a load-based purchase specification

Give the seller the transported load envelope, support locations, required loading method and proposed route constraints. Ask for written configuration-specific documentation.

  • Usable deck and loaded height
  • Distributed and concentrated ratings
  • Coupling and auxiliary axle provision
  • Inspection, service and operator documentation
03

Reconcile each claim against the actual trailer

Build a discrepancy list before relying on the listing. Match the serial plate, build sheet, current photographs and inspection notes. Ask which axles, suspension parts, neck components or loading equipment have changed. Keep seller statements separate from manufacturer references and record who supplied each item of evidence.

  • Identity and ownership documents
  • Current photographs
  • Options and modifications
  • Unresolved discrepancies
04

Request a configuration-specific response

Send a concise requirement sheet: transported dimensions and weight, support locations, loading method, desired deck geometry and the route questions still to be reviewed. Ask the seller to identify the offered unit and provide its applicable documentation. A family catalogue page is a research starting point and does not establish that a particular unit is for sale.

  • Exact offered unit
  • Configuration and condition evidence
  • Applicable ratings and charts
  • Responsible seller contact
